About Animal Haus Design

Some projects start with a business plan. This one started with a box of vintage textiles.

I've been a graphic designer for over three decades — first running my own studio, now leading creative for a nonprofit I love. Design has always been my language. But a few years ago I wanted something that was just mine. A side project with no brief, no client, no deadline. Something playful.

I didn't know what form it would take until I discovered a collection of vintage textiles — bold geometrics, unexpected color combinations, the kind of confident, joyful design that was made to last. I started scanning them. Studying them. Using them as a creative springboard.

That's when the animals showed up.

Why AI, and why it works

I've always been fascinated by AI as a creative tool — I use it in my day job, I think about it constantly, and I wanted to see what happened when I pointed it at something I genuinely loved. The answer, it turns out, is Animal Haus Design.

But here's what I want you to know: these mugs aren't generated. They're designed.

Every illustration starts with reference art I've personally curated — vintage textiles and images I've collected for their boldness, their color confidence, their joy. They're my creative springboard, not a strict rulebook. I write the prompts with a designer's precision. Then I push, adjust, recompose, and rework the color until what I'm looking at matches what I saw in my head. Thirty years of design instinct go into knowing when it's right — and when it isn't quite there yet.

The animals that emerge are their own thing. Sometimes the vintage influence is unmistakable. Sometimes something unexpected comes out — and I love it too much to change it.

Sometimes the result surprises me completely. Sometimes it makes me genuinely elated. Every single time, it makes me happy — and the whole point is that it makes you smile too.

What you're getting

Each Animal Haus mug is an 11oz ceramic coffee mug, dishwasher safe, made to order. When you buy one, you're not getting a mass-produced novelty. You're getting a piece of illustrated art that a real designer obsessed over — one that happens to look great on an open kitchen shelf and even better in your hands at 7am.

Animal Haus is just getting started — more animals, and eventually more ways to bring them home, are on the way.

These are mugs designed with intention. I hope you love them as much as I loved making them.
